C1 Atomic structure: Elements, Compounds, Mixtures
An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom.
Examples: gold, helium, neon, hydrogen, oxygen, copper, lithium, chlorine.
A compound is a new substance made when two or more different atoms are chemically combined.
Examples: magnesium oxide (MgO), sodium chloride (NaCl), water (H2O).
A mixture is a group of two or more substances put together, but not chemically joined.
A mixture can be:
element + element (gas)
element + compound (gas)
compound + compound (gas)
